Using Steel Wool to clean Aluminum Wheels
If there were no wheels there would be no transportation.
Wheels are important in cars, trucks, aero planes. Wheels in automobiles is
only part of the vehicle that is in contact with the ground and makes the car go
faster or slower. Due to constant movement of cars wheels wear off easily. It
is therefore necessary for smooth running of car to check the maintenance of its
tires regularly.
Many people focus on the appearance of wheels in a car and
use tire rims of different sizes and styles. Nearly every car comes fitted with
aluminum wheels as it is known for strength, cost effectiveness and durability.
Aluminum wheels are also easy to clean and when polish they shine but being a
metal aluminum on wheels can corrode and rust if proper care is not carried
out. The most common reason for corrosion is brake dust, which is gray black
dust that covers the wheels. Brake dust contains iron particles and carbon
fibers which comes from grinding of iron motor on the brake pads. If not
properly cleaned brake dust can be highly corrosive and damage the aluminum
wheels.
Steel wool on
aluminum wheels can be used for cleaning and polishing purposes. Steel wool
is a bundle of elastic steel fibers and effectively used for polishing metal
surfaces. Firstly rinse the aluminum wheels to remove any gravel and small
stones embedded in it. Then dry the wheel with a cloth and apply polish. Steel
wool is used as it has long fibers which makes it easy to apply the polishing
wax without scratching and make the aluminum wheels shine. But using steel wool on aluminum wheels is not
always suitable as the tiny metal strings in the wool can be embed in the
aluminum surface and can cause corrosion.
